General Position Description
The Electrical Department Leader utilizes technical expertise and leadership acumen to mentor and develop the electrical team and improve technical processes and deliverables, creating a strong, cohesive team and quality work product. While the Electrical Department Leader is focused on technical leadership and internal department management, significant time will also be spent supporting project management. The Electrical Department Leader will directly manage a team of Electrical Team Leaders and Senior Team Leaders.
This position will report to the office two days per week minimum. Additional in-office days may be required to facilitate internal and external meetings, site visits, events, or other business needs. Travel between offices may also be required in the performance of job duties.
Key Accountabilities
Department Leadership – 20%
- Lead the electrical department, promoting a culture of collaboration, trust, and professional growth
- Plan and manage project assignments based on team skills, availability, and development goals
- Run internal department meetings to coordinate electrical team staffing, schedules, and deliverables
- Partner with firm leadership to anticipate staffing needs and collaborate on sourcing efforts
- Offer direction and guidance to team in areas of technical engineering, design, and project management
- Assist team in solving technical engineering problems
- Mentor and coach team members, utilizing strengths and addressing areas for development
- Develop and identify training resources to advance staff skillsets
- Proactively address performance issues and lead performance review process for direct reports
- Maintain knowledge of firm policies and manage approvals for PTO, remote work, timesheets, expenses, professional development, and other leave requests for all direct reports
Technical – 20%
- Develop and maintain resources and standards for electrical design, including specifications, control diagrams, calculations, schedules, etc.
- Direct, oversee, and review technical team effort and deliverables for projects of varying scale
- Offer subject matter expertise in electrical engineering
- Research and understand new and complex codes, industry best practices, and permit requirements
- Discuss, evaluate, and share ideas with senior staff to solve complicated and challenging engineering problems
- Cultivate meaningful relationships with manufacturers, vendors, and other consultants to promote learning, innovation, and practice growth
Project Management – 20%
- Advise Team Leaders on achieving project success through employee and client satisfaction, quality, schedule, and budget
- Develop processes for efficient design and project management
- Attend and prepare for meetings as an electrical expert for early phase deliverables and large, complex projects
- Coach and support team members project management efforts
- Respond promptly and appropriately to requests
Quality and Organizational Management – 20%
- Serve as the department’s final authority for technical QA/QC, providing the ultimate approval on all technical documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards across all projects
- Continually improve and develop internal QA/QC processes and procedures
- Provide QA/QC review of project drawings and specifications for coordination issues, constructability, budgetary compliance, and code compliance
- Ensure deliverables meet company standards as well as client expectations
Production – 10%
- Prepare and review high-level technical memoranda and reports
- Prepare outlines and/or presentation materials and present to client for early stage deliverables and large or complex projects
- During staff leave or times of heavy workload, assist in production of high-level engineering deliverables
Professional and Organizational Development – 10%
- Coordinate with firm leadership team to develop strategic plans and contribute to initiatives that strengthen organizational effectiveness
- Develop resources, standards, and tools to increase team efficiency and technical ability
- Participate in organizational training and development programs
- Lead the technical onboarding and training of new team leaders
- Support the ongoing development of staff through mentorship and knowledge sharing
- Give and receive feedback to support learning, performance, and growth
- Support firm marketing efforts through client presentations, publications, networking events, etc.
- Attend team and client events
- Participate in the interview process to evaluate prospective candidates and recommend hiring decisions
- Submit timesheets, expense reports, and other administrative documentation accurately and on time
This position may perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
- 14+ years of AEC experience preferred
- Licensed Professional Engineer required
- Advanced proficiency in Revit
- Advanced proficiency in design and documentation
- Expert knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of electrical engineering

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements
Physical Demands:
- Regularly required to sit for extended periods at a desk using a computer
- Must be able to view a computer screen for prolonged periods
- Occasionally required to lift or move objects up to 50 pounds
- During site visits, may be required to:
- Walk on uneven terrain or unfinished surfaces
- Climb stairs and ladders
- Enter confined spaces or areas with limited accessibility
- Carry equipment or tools such as measuring devices or ladders
Mental Requirements:
- Ability to concentrate for extended periods while managing multiple tasks
- Must be able to write clearly and effectively in English
Work Environment:
- Primarily works in a standard office environment with typical office equipment and conditions
- Occasional visits to client offices and active construction sites, which may include exposure to:
- Noise, dust, and other typical construction site conditions
- Outdoor weather conditions and temperature variations
- Situational hazards requiring use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, safety vests, or boots

Compensation
The salary range listed is our best estimate based on industry data for the skills, experience, and responsibilities tied to this role. Final compensation may be more or less depending on specific applicant qualifications and experience, geography, and internal team equity. We aim to be fair, competitive, and transparent—within the boundaries of applicable laws.

- Baltimore, MD: $132,158 – $178,802
- Washington, DC: $152,952 – $206,936
